When a Shopee Buyer Asks to Pay You Directly

Shopee's own help center lists direct payment requests as a scam pattern — what a seller risks by agreeing, and the chat reply to send instead.

A Shopee buyer who messages your Facebook Page or LINE OA asking to skip checkout and transfer money straight to your account isn’t offering a shortcut. Shopee’s own help center lists this exact request as a scam pattern, and won’t guarantee a transaction made outside the app — a risk for the seller, not only the buyer.

When the request lands in a different inbox

The buyer usually isn’t messaging inside Shopee’s own chat — they’ve found your shop’s Facebook Page, LINE OA, or Instagram from a product photo, a package insert, or a quick search, and asks there instead: pay by bank transfer, skip the few days checkout and delivery take, and you’ll “ship it out today.” Sometimes it runs the other way — a regular buyer offers to pay you directly so neither of you loses anything to Shopee’s commission. Either way, the message usually lands in the same unified inbox as your order updates and product questions, right next to the kind of message that gets an automatic “sure” from whoever’s answering chats that hour. That’s where the risk actually sits — not in the message itself, but in answering it the same way you’d answer “do you have this in blue.”

What Shopee’s own pages say

Shopee’s help center is specific about what this covers: “Sharing contact information such as Phone number, personal payment information, email address, Facebook link, etc.” to a buyer, and “Asking buyers to make direct payments to the seller, such as bank transfers, deposits, etc., without using Shopee’s payment methods,” both sit on its own list of prohibited off-platform behaviour (Shopee: What to do when asked to transact outside Shopee). The same page states plainly that Shopee “does not guarantee the validity of transactions made outside the Shopee App or website” — so a dispute over a damaged item, a wrong size, or a parcel that never turns up has nowhere to go once payment happened outside Shopee’s own flow. Shopee’s separate scam-advisory page names the seller side of this pattern directly: a seller who tries to “direct you to transact outside of Shopee” is flagged as a fraud signal, and its standing advice is to report that seller to Shopee rather than send the transfer (Shopee: Scam Advisory). Agreeing to “just transfer me directly” doesn’t just risk Shopee’s own account action — it puts a seller’s own order on the same list those pages warn buyers about.

Set up in 1CS

Decide the answer once, not case by case. In Reply Templates (Settings > Reply Templates on web, “Quick Replies” on mobile — 1CS also calls these Canned Responses), save a shortcode such as /shopeepay with a short, polite decline: confirm the order stays on Shopee, and that you’re glad to answer product questions here in the meantime. Whoever is handling the inbox calls it up with / instead of improvising a reply under time pressure, which is also when a convenient-sounding request is easiest to agree to without thinking it through. Reply Templates sit inside 1CS’s unified inbox; the Thai help center walks through the exact screens, in Thai, at Reply Templates. Checking the transfer slip itself is a separate habit — the five-point checklist for payment slips you do legitimately accept in chat is the one to use once a payment genuinely belongs in a conversation, which a Shopee order never does.

The reply to copy

Send this instead of a freehand answer, even to a regular customer:

Thanks for your message! For both our sakes, we keep every Shopee order and payment inside the Shopee app — Shopee’s own rules don’t allow direct payment outside it, and if anything goes wrong with the order, Shopee can’t step in once payment happens outside the app. Please go ahead and check out on Shopee for [product name] as usual, and I’m happy to answer any questions here while you do.

A short checklist for whoever’s answering:

  1. Confirm it’s actually a request to move payment off Shopee — not an ordinary price or stock question before checkout.
  2. Send the saved Reply Template rather than answering freehand, even for a repeat customer.
  3. Point back to the specific Shopee listing so the buyer can finish checkout without searching again.
  4. If the buyer insists or claims a Shopee payment already failed, hand the case to a teammate rather than agreeing to anything outside the app yourself.
